How this comparison works
Only fixed-dollar negotiated observations with CPT, HCPCS, MS-DRG or APR-DRG codes from saved full-collection parts are included. Hospital-specific local codes are excluded. First, reported observations are averaged within each hospital source, payer, product type and service context. Product types are identified from explicit payer and plan labels. Medicare, Medicaid, explicitly labeled commercial, dual eligible, ambiguous and unclassified products are never pooled together. HMO or PPO alone does not prove a commercial product. When multiple payer labels are selected within a geography, their means are averaged within each hospital source first. Hospital sources then receive equal weight. Each service context receives equal weight in the basket. Context includes code, setting, billing class, modifiers and payment method. A context match does not establish that every contract term or bundle is equivalent. Geographic comparisons can also reflect different hospitals and payer availability; choose a single carrier or Carrier × region to inspect those differences.
The default uses only service contexts present in every displayed group. “All available” uses each group’s own service mix and is descriptive, not a like-for-like price comparison. The basket is one of each included service context, not an episode-of-care estimate or a forecast of employer spending. Percentages and formulas are excluded. Overview groups labels beginning with Aetna, Cigna, Humana, BCBS / Blue Cross / Blue Shield, or UnitedHealthcare / UHC into displayed brand families. Other labels remain separate; subsidiary relationships are not inferred. Different product types always remain separate. Price Explorer retains the original reported payer and plan labels. A multi-campus file counts as one hospital source. Partial, old and missing files remain coverage limitations.
Regions are application-defined parish groups for geographic filtering, not carrier network or regulatory boundaries. Overview records are aggregated from full collections; they are not calculated from the capped Price Explorer display sample.
